shucks

Mmmmmmm, this corn is so scrumptious! Is it hand-schucked? -Bob Wiley

I love shucking corn. It reminds me of quiet, sunny, summer evenings growing up. My mom would shuck corn on our tiny back deck. She would sit on a chair with a brown paper grocery bag in front of her and shuck away. Later, my younger brother and I assumed the job of corn shucking. Whether it was an assigned job or our eager willingness to help, I don't know. But I do remember getting super frustrated at the end of shucking each ear when the last yellow strings were almost impossible to pull off, and my mom reassuring me that a few strings were fine. Having the company of my younger brother or my mom while working on the corn was always fun. I remember having good conversations while shucking. (Shuck is such an odd sounding word, don't you think?) Now, I sit on my front cement slab of a porch and shuck corn while I watch the kids play. I haven't yet asked for the kids help, as I like shucking quite a lot. I don't want to share the job if I don't have to - yet. I've got it down to a four step process: I split the top tuft into two, pull one half all the way down, pull the other half down, and snap the cob out of the base. Simple, fun, it's therapeutic for me.

This year, Indiana's corn in practically non-existant. We've had too much rain. The only corn I have found has been imported from Georgia from the local grocer. There is a family who sells corn at the Farmer's Market. Everybody in B-town knows who I'm talking about, right? They always have a constant line of about 15 people waiting to get their corn. No corn profit for them this year yet. I've only seen them sell new potatoes and some greens. My heart goes out to them. I have really enjoyed their corn in previous years. Shucks.

And my last tidbit on corn. . . Ty's corn allergy has seemed to subside. His rashy reaction has slowly disappeared! We are pretty excited to have a summer full of corn on the cob - that is, if Indiana can start growing some corn here soon.

I have totally passed the job on to Cole and Kali who actually do a great job while I am doing the other food tasks. I could really go for some DARN FRESH CORN though, store bought corn is NOT the same!

I can barely keep up with your posts but I love getting a little does of Anj more often than not so good work and keep them coming fast!

I have memories of shucking bushels and bushels of corn at family reunions at the lake growing up. Sigh. I'm eager to pass that job - I mean, er, memory - off to my kids someday. :)

I felt so bad that I didn't get to talk to you or even say goodbye at the pool the other day! I'll look for you next time. I think my kids will be a little more manageable there than they were last year.

Happy Birthday! I might not have gotten around to calling in time but you gotta give me credit for remembering! I hope you had a great day and I'll TRY and call you tomorrow. I love you and I wish more than anything we could have gone out on a girls night to celebrate your big day. All in good time though, right?!

Yeah that Ty is getting over his corn allergy. I love corn in all it's forms . . . on the cob, in the can, by way of bread and let's not forget all the foods made with corn syrup. Beckham and I love candy :)

ANJ! I totally missed your birthday. I feel TERRIBLE. I looked at my calender the other day and realized. Your b-day is one of the ones I have always known too- Laila's is the same day. I hope you had a great day- we love you- even though I missed your special day. I'll make it up somehow. I remember shucking on our back porch with Zacc. Good memories.
