We are spending the week here in Utah hanging with our families. Today was a goody. It consisted of feeding ducks at Sugar House Park with cousin Cash, watching Matthias' 3 soccer games, and Hawaiian shaved ice down at BYU. A super hot day, but lots of fun!
Matthias' team, the Red Glare, won all 3 games today and are heading to the semifinal tomorrow on the fourth of July. He's pretty pumped. Note, Matthias chose the name from the Star Spangled Banner. Would be very fitting if they pulled out a final win on Independence Day.

troubled bridge over water
We were the first family up to the cabin this year and saw that the bridge over the Moose was in bad shape. We usually reserve one day during the trip to fix up or improve the cabin in some way. Matthias, Brad and Eric built a lovely new bridge. The kids gathered kindling for the wood stove.
Before.
Almost there.
After.

matthias' 32nd
Our great friends, the Brenchley's, took us out for Matthias' birthday. The Ashton's joined us, and we all had a great time. We drove down to Ft. Collins to eat at a Hibachi grill. The entertainment was as good as the food, if not better. The sushi was fun, we ordered a platter of different rolls, including the Orgasm roll, which inspired jokes all night. The prom couple next to us also inspired our after dinner laughs. It's so fun to have friends that you can laugh and laugh with. The chef ended his show by throwing a shrimp in each or our mouths. After dinner we played cards with everyone and had Matthias' birthday cake request = raspberry cheesecake, made by me. Thanks to dear friends!

branding
We live in real cowboy country, the West that you read about in books and see in movies. As tradition goes around these parts, neighbors and friends help each other during branding season. Eager to witness the wildness of the West, we drove out to a nearby ranch to help some friends brand their cattle. Matthias didn't have a cowboy hat, but that didn't matter, he had work boots.
On our way out, it wasn't hard to see that spring was in the air... baby animals close to their mothers, mothers full of milk. The land was green and lush and there were wild flowers. It all seemed idyllic.
On our way out, it wasn't hard to see that spring was in the air... baby animals close to their mothers, mothers full of milk. The land was green and lush and there were wild flowers. It all seemed idyllic.
I started dreaming about what it would like to live out on a ranch... until we got closer to the branding sight. The cattle seemed to be in a bit of a frenzy. Some were standing and staring at their young, some were running back and forth. Then I heard the noise... the awful noise.
Of mothers crying for their babies. Oh, it was unsettling.
The branding was already under way, so Matthias jumped in and began wrestling cows. I watched and took photos to document the process. I was offered a chance to help out. No thank you I said.
This is how it went, Over and over. First you got to round 'em up.
Then you just grab one. Right by the leg. It takes brute force to drag them out. Oh my.
Then you have to get the cattle on their side for the actual branding. These cowboys flipped 'em real quick, and pinned them down.
And then there was the smell. Of burning flesh. I really disliked the whole process, but this was really the worst. The ranchers assured me that the branding didn't hurt the animals, I however was not convinced. Here are the ranchers' brands. S&L.
On goes the S. Burning skin smells terrible.
On goes the L. Ouch.
And to add salt to their wound, as it seemed to me, they were stuck with a needle in the armpit and given a dose of antibiotics. The ranchers said it was all necessary, but I didn't know that cows got antibiotics this early in the process. I thought cows only received antibiotics once they got to the feed lots, because of the conditions they have to live in. This picture shows one of the helpers, a gal from our church who is actually a nurse, getting ready to give a shot. She told me she was doing it in the least painful way by pinching their skin and sticking the needle in at an angle. Aye yie yie.
And here is Bex observing from a distance.
To sum this little experience up, I hope I don't have to experience it again. On the flip side, a bonus for us it that we have easy access to buying a free range cow, that is if someone wants to go in on a cow with us.

dad pull-ups
Before bed, Bex makes Matthias do tricks with him. Being catapulted onto the love sack, flipped in the air, or taking a ride on Dad's legs while doing pull-ups, the boys love it all and I love how much they idolize Matthias. Just as it should be.

roadside roses
What's so great about these flowers is not the fact that Matthias gave me roses, although I really do love them. If you know Matthias at all, you will know that flowers aren't really his thing to give. And if you know me, you will know that roses aren't my favorite flower. But back to why I like these roses so much. He bought them from a fellow that parks his white pick-up on the side of Country Club Dr in town. He posts a particle board sign that says, Dozen Roses $8.00, and keeps them in a giant cooler. We've often wondered who keeps this roadside florist in business.
I'll have you know, Matthias didn't go small, he upgraded to the $9 dozen which included babies breath. I love these roses so much because he got them just to make me laugh. They are pretty and make me smile every time I look at them. Thanks for making me laugh Hun and keeping a fellow American in business.

si vas para chile
Matthias sings this Chilean folk song to the boys at night before bed. It works as a great lullaby. He learned it during the two years he spent in Chile. The boys love this song, so do I.
Matthias has a great singing voice.

indiana small-mouth aren't madison browns
Matthias has been out fishing quite a bit lately. My dad finished building his rod over the summer and now that he has it, he has been a fishing fool. I think he went 3 times last week. The fishing out here is just not comparable to fishing on the Madison for several reasons. Big browns are none to be found, the streams are piddly, oh, and the humidity is horrid. He wouldn't appreciate me posting a picture of this very small, small-mouth bass he caught, however, he is addicted now and will endure the undesirable circumstances just to keep catching (and releasing of course). I refuse to eat a bass.

behind bars
Tonight is Bar Eve. Matthias takes the Bar Exam Tuesday and Wednesday. I am pretty sure Matthias has felt like he has been behind bars the entire summer, missing out on all summer funness, sitting behind a desk, cramming info after boring info into his head.
Here's wishing you a great exam hun! You are going to do great! We love you!

F to the third
Matthias took Ty to the Cutter's Football Camp Saturday. The Indiana Cutters are a Semi-Pro Football team who offer a couple of free camps here this summer to build up their fan base and teach some football fundamentals (again, Bloomington is THE place for kids and free fun). They taught skills for some different positions. Ty especially loved practicing quarterback skillzzzz. He was the smallest footballer in attendance.
The FATHER in our house always brings us lots of happiness and fun times. We had a great Father's Day with Matthias. The boys eyed a cactus plant at the store the other day and told me that was what they wanted to get their dad. I tried to make a theme out of it and subscribed Matthias to High Country News - a great Western Environmental publication that he loves. We spent the morning making him a bfast in bed (we're big on that at our house if you didn't notice) of ham and cheese crepes, watching him eat bfast in bed, taking turns telling him all the things we loved about him, and looking through family photos.
And last, what is summer without catching Fireflies in a glass jar? Everyone needs to catch fireflies at least once in their lifetime. Lucky for us, they are plentiful here in the summer evenings. We caught a dozen and brought them into our dark apartment to watch them light up. Have you seen the clip from the Curious George movie when George eats fireflies? He sticks out his tongue after and it is glowing florescent green. Well Ty tried to eat one, and immediately spit it out. He then squashed it on the cement and the guts did in fact glow green. So fascinating, those bugs.
Running through the big guys holding on to the ball, trying not to let it get knocked out of his hands.

Getting psyched to tackle the giant blue pad.

Our super star scrimmaging.

schnitzelbank
Matthias' parents and little bro, Zacc, came in town for graduation weekend! It has been so much fun to have them here. Events taken place thus far: celebration of Zacc's birthday at the Schnitzelbank (German restaurant), family game of bowling, trip to pouring Nashville, IN, and the Law School Party. Joan and LaMar have been so sweet and delightful to be with, and Zaccy has become the kid's new jungle gym! What a fun time we are having. We can't stop saying Schnitzelbank. . . or Leiderhossen.
We hired a babysitter and went out to the Law School Party tonight! We introduced Matthias' parents to all his favorite professors and friends, tapped our toes and snapped our fingers to the rhythm of the live Jazz band. I definitely had a proud wife moment tonight - seeing Matthias in all his Law school glory, he's worked so hard and I can't wait for the big and final celebration tomorrow: GRADUATION!!! That Matthias is one handsome man. Schnitzelbank!
